I never thought I'd buy a Swatch because their watches always seemed to be too funky for my taste. Bright colored plastic, designed to look cheap and disposable, but with fairly hefty prices for a throw-away. I liked my strictly-business dive and military-style watches that could take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. But recently, seeking a little more color and style for my watch collection, I took another look at the seemingly endless variety that is Swatch and decided to dive in with this model.
First off, it's a man-size watch with a large case and bold and hefty-looking bracelet. But the bracelet is feather-light aluminum and the case is translucent plastic, so the actual weight is minimal. The bracelet is comfortable and easy to adjust and, while the case is large, it avoids looking like a hockey puck. The dark green color (this model also comes in red, blue, brown and black that I know of) is great and the slightly lighter sun-ray green dial is eye-catching. The huge hour and minute hands are easy to read under all conditions, although I wonder why Swatch didn't use Luminova to light them in the dark. The small dots at number positions sparkle like faceted diamonds, the combined effect is not unlike a shiny Christmas-tree ornament. The Swiss quartz chrono movement is super-accurate, but if you really need a chronograph (stopwatch), there are more serious and more easily read sub-dial designs out there. This one's strictly for fun, but still accurate to 1/10th second.
So, to sum up, a big, fun, shiny watch, a good design compromise between frivolous and functional, maybe a little over-priced at $123, but wait 'til the holidays, when Amazon might put it on sale.
